A Review of the Movie - Gangs of New York

The film "Gangs of New York" was released in 2002. I 1st saw the Martin Scorcese movie while it was very first released. I did not consider substantially of the movie upon 1st viewing. I believed it was entertaining but not a good movie. I saw it once again a handful of months ago, and I ought to say that I identified new insights immediately after I saw it once more. I now feel of this as a wonderful film.

To summarize the movie briefly - The film is about New York in the year 1863. It shows fairly accurately I believe what life was love in New York in the Civil War era.

The primary plot centers on a city gangster - Bill "the butcher" Cutting played by Daniel Day Lewis and an Irish immigrant - Amsterdam Vallon played by Leonardo Di Caprio. Bill killed Amsterdam"s father years prior to and now Vallon desires revenge. He desires to kill Cutting.

The film shows the hostility in between the "natives" - individuals who had been born in America and the immigrants - people today who came to America from other nations. The natives known as themselves genuine Americans, somehow superior to the immigrants.

Soon after my second viewing of the movie I realized what a violent and racist society New York was more than a century ago. Life was at occasions barbaric. New York was a melting pot of numerous various persons but it was certainly not all sweetness and adore. Lots of ethnic groups hated every other and that hatred frequently erupted into violence. A prime instance have been the draft riots of July,1863 in which mainly Irish mobs went on a killing spree. They targeted groups they did not appreciate, especially African-Americans and the wealthy. Federal troops had to be named in from Gettysburg to restore order immediately after days of death and destruction. Crime, vice and corruption have been rampant.

Director Scorcese paints a beautiful, realistic and gritty portrait of New York not so lengthy ago in our history. The film shows whilst the nation was at war with itself throughout the civil war, New York was at war with itself. The city was going through expanding pains which resulted in the 20th century of New York becoming 1 of the greatest cities in the globe.

I extremely suggest seeing this movie for the good acting performances, the settings and a way of life at the crossroads of American history. View an essential component of New York history.
