Retirement Issues for Boomers: About Schmidt, the Movie

About Schmidt is an R-rated film about retirement, from 2002, with Jack Nicholson and Kathy Bates.

Nicholson plays a newly retired insurance coverage guy, who finds retirement is not really what he had hoped for (like so several of us). His wife dies, daughter is marrying somebody he does not like, and life is not excellent...

It is very a excellent retirement film and so fascinating to see how they portray this new retiree! This isn't a really feel great film, so beware -- It is fairly truthful about the retirement transition and kinda sad.

The show opens displaying him sitting in an virtually empty workplace, staring at the just about five:00 pm clock, and waiting to stroll out that retirement door. Then off he goes with a single final appear.

R E T I R E D...

Then there is the Retirement Celebration, the speeches, and his half-smile. A single retired guy does a speech, saying one thing like: "The retirement gifts do not imply some thing, the retirement Celebration does not imply something, pension and Social Safety do not imply one thing. What does count - you did very good work and you have been a productive member of society, worked for the prime rated insurance coverage carrier in the nation, effectively-respected by neighborhood, and have fantastic lasting friendships. At the end of his profession, if a man can say I did my job and did it effectively... that is getting wealthy and you are seeking at a really wealthy man!" Schmidt is nevertheless half-smiling...

At six:59 am, the subsequent morning, he is up and functioning on a crossword with his cup of coffee. Wife tends to make breakfast and you can inform his heart basically is not in it.

He watches Television, flipping from channel to channel, uninterested in most of it.

Dressed in a suit, he goes back into the workplace asking the guy who took his former job if he necessary any enable. Did he have any inquiries? Some thing that necessary explanation? Nope. Nope and Nope. BUT when he returns household, he tells his wife they DID will need enable with some loose ends.

He writes an introduction letter to an Adopted Youngster and gets some of the underlying strain off his chest about the new replacement worker, talks about wrinkles and ear hair, and exactly where he believed his life was headed early on - ahead of household. He talks about his wife of 42 years, and all the things that irritates him about her.

This is exactly where the wife dies. His minister talks about anger, and why It really is OK. Daughter returns property. Funeral performed and over. He is alone.

His sad single life starts... he tries an RVing adventure, travels down memory lane, attends his daughters wedding. He is a Lost Soul, basically basically not delighted with life, and does not look to know what to do or who he is. Sound familiar?

** THE END **

Hey - Did you count on me to spill the beans on the complete film? This is it... if you are new to retirement, this is an in particular thoughtful film!
